Nanoblading is a form of brow tattooing that implements a handheld tattoo machine tool and one very fine needle (as opposed to microblading, which uses several) to semi-permanently lay pigment under the skin, approximating the look of actual eyebrow hairs.

Nanoblading gives more precision and a crisp, extremely defined look. The strokes are thinner and they look more like natural hairs. That’s why nanoblading is a better option for clients with little to no brow hairs.

Nano is also a better option for oilier skin and large pores as the strokes are more resilient, and for older clients since the flexible needle is gentler on the skin than the microblading tool.

Microblading is also a semi-permanent makeup treatment for your brows, and it too gives the illusion of thicker brows by drawing on extra hairstrokes.

However, it’s done manually, with a thin blade rather than a needle, so the strokes of microblading are somewhat thicker, and the results are slightly more dramatic than nano brows.

Microblading and nanoblading both offer fine hair strokes that look natural and true to life, but nanoblading provides further precision and accuracy because it uses tiny needles, compacted together into an ultra fine blade.

The main difference between nanoblading vs microblading is in the technique, which then entails differences in the results. Although it’s called nanoblading, there are no blades involved.

Nano brows are done with a machine – some artists call this treatment digital hair stroke brows. The machine features an extremely fine needle, which vibrates and pierces the skin, depositing pigments in tiny dots that add up to strokes. The needle is flexible and thin, so it causes very little trauma to the skin.

Microblading is a manual technique. A hand-held tool that features a thin blade made up of 12-16 needles is dragged through the skin. The blade is dipped in pigment, and it’s deposited into the tiny cuts. The microblading blade is thin too, and some artists even use the same thickness as the nano-needle – 0.18. However, it’s not flexible, so there’s less control over pressure and the motion.

The upside of nano brows versus micro brows is how long they stick around on the skin.

Where microblading lasts around 1-2 years due to the depth of the pigment placement, nanoblading can last up to three years—though the timeframe is largely dependent on the pigment color, depth, ink type, intensity of work, and the client's skin.

Nanobladinng works on all skin types. Microblading work on normal and dry skin types.

About 2 hours after microblading/nanoblading, you should run a cotton swab dipped in sterilized water over the area.

This will get rid of any excess dye on your brows. It will also keep the area sterile.  It takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days for the skin to begin to appear healed and for the pigment to fade to its intended shade.

Follow these steps to take care of your skin after microblading/nanoblading:

  • Avoid getting the area wet for at least 7 days. This includes keeping your face dry during a shower.
  • Don’t wear makeup for at least a week. This is because the pigments are still settling into the shallow cuts in your skin caused by the blading.
  • Don’t pick at scabs, tug, or itch the eyebrow area.
  • Avoid saunas, swimming, and excessive sweating until the area is completely healed and you have a follow-up appointment.
  • Keep your hair away from your brow line.
  • Apply any medicated cream or healing balm provided by your technician as directed.

After your skin is fully healed, you’ll want to protect your microblading/nanoblading investment by taking care of your skin. Applying a sunscreen to the microbladed/nanobladed area may help prevent fading.

All brow PMU treatments have similar healing and aftercare. The healing process for both nanoblading and microblading is considered complete after about 6 weeks.
